Description

Another image from the total lunar eclipse on the night of May 15/16, 2022.  This image was taken at 12:44 AM EDT on May 16th near the end of the period of total eclipse using lucky imaging techniques.   I wanted to try lucky imaging with a color planetary camera this eclipse to see if I could get some sharper images of the full eclipse.  I didn't want to have to make a large number of captures to cover the full lunar disk, and the pairing of my GT81 refractor and ZWO ASI224MC planetary camera allowed me to capture the full disk in only four shots (2 was cutting it close at the edges and worked pretty well for partial disk images during partial eclipse phases).  I was happy with the results which definitely were sharper than my DSLR images.

Imaged with William Optics GT81 at F6 (478 mm focal length), UVIR cut filter, and ZWO ASI224MC planetary camera.  Camera was set to a gain of 350 and used a 75 ms exposure.

Image capture using Firecapture. Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 25% of 500 frames). Panorama generated from 4 sub images using Microsoft Image Composition Explorer (ICE).  Processed in Registax (initial wavelet sharpening, histogram stretch) and PixInsight (additional contrast enhancement using local histogram transformations with kernel size = 150/64 and color saturation boost).
